Renovation of the Haringvlietbrug

August 2010 – Between the Hollands Diep and the Haringvliet is the 1200 metre long Haringvlietbrug. This bridge has been thoroughly renovated and reinforced. The system of end-bearing piles was replaced and now meets the current standards and can accommodate increased traffic loads. The steel structures were galvanised by Verzinkerij Heerhugowaard and a three-layer wet paint system was applied, followed by a final coat of polyurethane. The entire preserving process was supervised by Verzinkerij Heerhugowaard.

The concrete substructure was reinforced, and pre-tensioned clamping strips were fastened around the piles to transfer the load away from the piles themselves. Then the bridge was lifted so that the old roller bearings could be replaced with modern multiple convex roller bearings. Steel platforms were fitted between the piles to facilitate inspection and maintenance. Each platform is accessible via a flight of stairs and a man hole. The steel structures were designed and constructed by Civiele technieken de Boer-Spanlift of Nieuwegein and Rijnstaal Alphen, and preserved by Verzinkerij Heerhugowaard.
